Unleashing the Power of Volunteering

I have always believed in the importance of personal and professional growth, networking, and giving back to the community and the actuarial industry that has shaped my career. You are never too young or inexperienced to begin your journey of giving back. Go at your own pace given the time that you have. Volunteering not only allows you to lend your expertise and time, but also benefits you personally and professionally. It is a transformative opportunity to build your skills in new areas, work on projects you ordinarily do not have the chance to, and to build new connections with professionals in your industry and beyond. Building on my passion for advocating and contributing to my community and our profession is and has been an ongoing source of fulfillment and happiness for me.

Benefits of Active Involvement: Learning, Sharing, Networking, and Growth

Being an active volunteer with the CAS has unlocked a lot of benefits for me. I have had the privilege to learn from experts, exchange ideas with others, and share my knowledge and experiences. These interactions have expanded my horizons and allowed me to develop crucial soft skills for collaboration and leadership. The networking opportunities have been invaluable, fostering meaningful connections and opening doors to new opportunities.

Taking on Multiple Roles: Navigating and Strategizing Participation

While some suggest belonging to only a few volunteer groups to avoid burnout, I have found value in being involved in multiple groups and organizations, both in my professional and personal life. Each situation provided unique opportunities for growth and contribution, and I was dedicated to all of them, balancing my commitments while staying committed to making a difference.

Unlocking the Power of Volunteering

Volunteering for the CAS is a remarkable endeavor that offers countless benefits. The advantages are immense, from expanding your knowledge and skills to sharing your expertise while networking with industry professionals. It is essential to find your anchor, understand your “why,” and actively participate in volunteer groups, projects, and initiatives.

I am grateful for the opportunities that volunteering has provided me, and I encourage all actuaries to consider the transformative power of volunteering. By actively engaging in your community and professional organization, you can shape your career, expand your network of contacts, and have lasting friendships, develop crucial skills, and leave a legacy both on a personal and professional basis.

Based on my volunteer journey, here are five tips for getting started and maximizing the benefits of involvement with the CAS:

  • Join Your First Working Group or Task Force: Take that initial step and join a volunteer group that aligns with your interests and goals. This decision will lay the foundation for your involvement and contributions.
  • Show Up for Meetings: Actively participate in meetings in person or via videoconference. Your presence demonstrates your commitment and eagerness to contribute.
  • Speak Up and Contribute: When you feel ready, confidently engage in discussions, share your thoughts, and contribute your expertise. Your unique perspective adds value to the conversations and helps shape outcomes.
  • Volunteer and Take on Projects: Embrace opportunities to volunteer and take on projects within the working group or task force. These hands-on experiences allow you to showcase your abilities, expand your network, and make a tangible impact.
  • Embrace New Challenges: Once you have gained confidence and experience, don’t be shy or afraid to seek new opportunities. Join another volunteer group or take on leadership roles to continue your personal and professional growth.
